Meet the Louisiana Red Crayfish

The Louisiana Red Crayfish goes by many names. Whether you call it a red swamp crawfish, Louisiana crawfish, Louisiana mudbug, or a crawdad, Procambarus clarkia is a striking invertebrate!  

The Louisiana Red Crayfish ranges in length from two inches to four-and-a-half inches. One of the first things you’ll notice about this crustacean is its red color! Its claws are an even brighter red than the rest of its body.Both its claws and head are long and narrow.  

Wondering where you can find these brightly-colored creatures? These freshwater crustaceans love warm climates, are native to North America, and live in the Mississippi River drainage basin.  

Crayfish are a favorite food for many people, and much of the crayfish people eat is Louisiana Red Crayfish. In fact, Louisiana Red Crayfish is one of the top species of crayfish farmed for human consumption.
