MISSISSIPPI STATE -- A “Southern girl” with roots in north Florida is the new specialist in Family Education and Policy for the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

Tabitha Staier, who began her position Aug. 1, is responsible for the development of programs that promote healthy relationships for individuals, couples and families in Mississippi. She will work with county Extension personnel to evaluate needs of couples and families, and implement relevant family-related programs in those areas.

“One of my first challenges is learning the geography, demographics and people of Mississippi,” said the Jacksonville, Fla., native. “I need to build and solidify strong relationships with people across the state to be effective.”

Staier earned an associate of arts degree in social sciences from Lake City Community College in Lake City, Fla., and a bachelor of arts in psychology from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Her academic resume also includes a master of science degree in marriage and family therapy from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga., and a doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Florida State University.

“We are excited to have Dr. Staier join our faculty because she has already developed a strong reputation as an expert in the field of family education,” said Gary Jackson, director of MSU’s School of Human Sciences. “She comes to Mississippi with the education, experience and professional network to conduct research and develop educational programs related to issues facing Mississippi families.”

A registered marriage and family therapist, Staier holds memberships in the National Council of Family Relations and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. She has made research presentations at annual meetings of these organizations and at the Annual Conference of the Florida Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
