MISSISSIPPI STATE – Youth of all ages can spend a day at Tougaloo College on June 18 learning about sustainable agriculture through a variety of hands-on activities.

Admission is free to the Youth Sustainable Ag Day at the Tougaloo-Rainbow Garden. The event is sponsored by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, Hinds County 4-H, Tougaloo College and the Alcorn Cooperative Extension Program.

Participants will learn about sustainable agriculture techniques, urban and backyard gardening, natural beekeeping, cooking and recycling. They also will take a garden and trail tour of the Tougaloo facility.

“Children involved with the 4-H Youth Sustainable Agriculture Project have shown an increased interest in gardening, recycling and healthy living,” said Felicia Bell, Barnyard Crew 4-H Club leader and event organizer. “Children are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables that they had a hand in growing.”

The ag day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Tougaloo campus.

To get to the garden, enter Tougaloo College’s main gates off County Line Road in Jackson. The garden is next to the woods and behind the science building.
