MSU provides replanting information to Delta farmers

MISSISSIPPI STATE – As floodwaters in the Delta recede, Mississippi State University experts are helping producers make wise decisions about cropland management.
Agronomic crops personnel with the MSU Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment station have developed a publication on late-season planting and crop management. The publication, titled After the Flood: Row Crop Replanting, also includes post-flood crop insurance information.
The publication covers disease and pest management topics for corn, soybean, rice, cotton and grain sorghum farmers. Also included is information on post-flood soil fertility, residue management and herbicide carryover.
“The agronomic crops and research personnel involved in developing this publication have a strong working knowledge of the issues farmers will be facing as they replant,” said Joe Street, MSU’s state program leader of agriculture. “With floodwaters covering an estimated 185,000 acres of row cropland, farmers in the flooded region are going to be dealing with issues for quite some time. We’ll continue to get them timely information to help make their decision-making process less stressful.”
