Fourth-graders enchanted by MSU's wood magic
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Mississippi State University hosted approximately 4,000 children, teachers and visitors Oct. 6-10 at the annual MSU Wood Magic Science Fair.
“We had another successful fair,” said Rubin Shmulsky, head of the MSU Department of Sustainable Bioproducts. “It was a fun-filled, busy week when children traveled from all over the state to learn about forestry, sustainable bioproducts and wildlife.”
Through various interactive stations, children explored forest-related topics, such as lumber manufacturing, composites, wood preservation and tree variation. Students also participated in activities that taught them about a variety of wood properties and products, papermaking and furniture manufacturing.
“Attendees discovered the importance of sustainability, forest products and forest resources,” said David Jones, associate Extension professor and forest products specialist. “The fair gave students insight into how these resources impact their daily lives.”
The Wood Magic Science Fair was sponsored by the MSU College of Forest Resources, the MSU Extension Service, the Mississippi Forestry Association and the Mississippi Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
