Field days begin statewide cycle Aug. 21 in Choctaw
CHOCTAW, Miss. -- Farmers can learn about fall crop production during the Aug. 21 field day organized by the Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production.
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will host the first of several rotating field days at their Farm I location, between Carthage and Kosciusko. Subsequent field days will be held at different farms throughout the state.
“By rotating our field days among producers in the state, attendees experience a wide variety of learning opportunities that encourage networking, foster future leadership and provide access to new ideas, information and people,” said Keith Benson, manager at the Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production.
Topics also include pest and disease management, irrigation and fermentation: preserving the harvest. Attendees will tour Farm I, which consists of four high tunnels, one acre of field production and one greenhouse where certified organic produce is grown for wholesale accounts and Community Supported Agriculture shares in the Choctaw community.
The program begins at 8 a.m. and ends at noon. Attendance is free, but preregistration is required.
Field days are scheduled for the third Friday of each month. The last field day is set for Dec. 11.
To register for the field day or for more information, contact Keith Benson at [email protected]. Farm I is located at 7810 County Line Road in Carthage.
The Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production is located in Holmes County between Goodman and Durant.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and Alcorn State University Extension Program provide support for the series, while the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and U.S. Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Grant Program fund the field day series.
