Greenhouse tomato growing taught at March workshop
RAYMOND, Miss. -- Individuals interested in greenhouse tomato production can learn how to successfully grow and market the crop during the Greenhouse Tomato Short Course March 1 and 2 in Raymond.
Experienced growers and experts with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, the University of Tennessee Extension Service and Auburn University will present seminars on all aspects of production during the 26th annual workshop.
The course will be held at Eagle Ridge Conference Center at 1500 Raymond Lake Road in Raymond.
Topics include lessons growers will learn in their first year, understanding greenhouse design and engineering, properly controlling the greenhouse environment, using social media to benefit the business, best cultural practices for greenhouse vegetables, plant nutrition for tomatoes and lettuce, an overview of the latest varieties, a cost analysis of production, market development, and alternative crops.
An in-depth pest management workshop will include information on diagnosing plant problems, insect and plant disease identification and control, and physiological disorders.
Participants will tour a successful greenhouse operation that produces tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce.
The workshop is the longest running course of its kind in the United States and attracts participants from more than 20 states, Latin America, the Caribbean and sometimes Canada and Mexico.
Exhibitors from the U.S. and Canada will display and demonstrate their products.

Registration includes refreshments, lunch on both days, all Extension publications and a Greenhouse Tomato Short Course baseball cap.
