Bolivar County Ag Newsletter
Introduction
At the start of June, the MS Delta row crop outlook forecast was “cautiously optimistic”. As most know situations can quickly change in the world of agriculture.
Many producers in the North Delta have been affected by the unprecedented rainfall and subsequent flooding from June 7th through the 10th. Thousands of acres have been damaged or destroyed and some fields have been underwater for over a week.
As the water recedes, fields dry, and the extent of the damage is determined; management decisions about how best to move forward will need to be made quickly. This is a difficult time for the MS Delta agricultural community, but we know our farmers will persevere as they always have.
As always, it is our job at MSU Extension to provide support and resources as they are needed. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone or stop by the office. Extension agents throughout the North Delta are currently performing Ag Damage Assessments for those who are interested in reporting their damage and losses. If you would like to have an assessment done for your farm please contact our office or myself directly.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

With the significant amount of flooding in the Mississippi Delta region, many producers are faced with either having to replant their crop, or they may have been prevented from planting their crop in the first place. It is essential for producers to know what their crop insurance options are, and the dates that will impact these options.

Pandemic Cover Crop Program
Agricultural producers who have coverage under most crop insurance policies are eligible for a premium benefit from USDA if they planted cover crops during this crop year. The Pandemic Cover Crop Program (PCCP), offered by USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA), reduces producers’ overall premium bills and helps them maintain their cover crop systems. Cultivating cover crops requires a sustained, long-term investment, and the economic challenges of the pandemic made it financially challenging for many producers to maintain cover crop systems. PCCP helps ensure producers can continue this important conservation practice.
PCCP is part of USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative, a bundle of programs to bring financial assistance to farmers, ranchers and producers who felt the impact of COVID-19 market disruptions.
