Angelonia

Many gardeners consider Angelonia one of the best plants for late summer color list today on Southern Gardening. 

For the full sun Angelonia are called summer snapdragons.  Angelonia is a member of the snapdragon family that thrives on the heat and humidity, what a wonderful addition to our Mississippi gardens and landscapes. 

They begin flowering shortly after planting in late spring and continue to bloom profusely until frost in the fall with little deadheading.  Since the garden world is dominated by plants with round flowers, the spiky texture of the Angelonia flower stalks are welcome additions to any summer garden. 

In 2007 the Serena Angelonia were selected as Mississippi Medallion winners.  Flower colors include blues, pinks, violets, and white.  Serena Angelonia will grow to 12 inches tall and spread up to 14 inches. 

Pairing Serena white Angelonia with 2011 Mississippi Medallion winner Sunpatiens for a great full sun combination.  Melampodium, lantana, and profusion zinnia also make great combinations plants. 

A new variety of Angelonia has spreading characteristic.  The Angelmist series are low growing and free flowering.  They are exceptional for landscape or hanging basket use.

Once established Angelonia is drought and heat tolerant.  These are great attributes for the hot summer conditions in Mississippi landscapes. 

Angelonia will thrive in fertile, well-drained soil.  The addition of three to four inches of good quality mulch will improve even the most compacted clay soil.  Fertilize with a complete controlled release garden fertilizer.  Supplemental water soluble fertilizer applied monthly will keep Angelonia going strong. 

Wherever you need summer color, Angelonia will perform the entire summer season and beyond.
