Summer Angelonia

I consider Angelonia one of the best plants for the hot summer garden today on Southern Gardening.

Angelonia is a member of the snapdragon family and thrives in the full sun during of the heat and humidity of the summer season, which is a requirement of our Mississippi gardens and landscapes.

Angelonia are called summer snapdragons. Since the garden world is dominated by plants with round flowers, the spiky texture of the Angelonia flower stalks are welcome additions to any summer garden.

Over the last couple weeks, I’ve seen the garden center displaying some really good looking plants. In 2007, serina Angelonia was selected as a Mississippi medallion winner and has been a garden winner ever since. Flower colors include blues, reds, pinks, and whites. Serenia Angelonia will grow up to twelve inches tall and spread up to fourteen inches. If you’ve gown serena Angelonia, then I know you’ll love the sereneda series, which are more dwarf and compact.

A flower serenida are, in my opinion, deeper and more vibrant than those of serina. In fact sarenida pink was named an all American section winner in 2014. Like all Angelonia, seraneda plants are drought and heat tolerant while continuing to produce large number of flower stems all season long. And just to reinforce how good these plants are just for our gardens and landscape, serednida will be named a Mississippi Medallion winner in 2016.

Wherever you need summer color, Angelonia will perform the entire summer season.
